Ric Flair arrives in WWF with NWA title. In September of 1991, during a Barber Shop segment on WWF Challenge, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was set to make a huge announcement for the show: the announcement was the arrival of World Wrestling Federation's newest superstar, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. However, before Ric Flair even walked out from behind the curtain, the audience was greeted to an even bigger surprise. Heenan was holding up in the air the WCW World Heavyweight Title and declared Ric Flair as the "real world's heavyweight champion." This entire incident began with Jim Crockett Jr., the owner of the National Wrestling Alliance, wanting to compete on a national level with Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation. The company tried touring all around the United States and by doing that, ended up losing millions of dollars. Having no where to turn and almost going bankrupt, NWA sold the company to Turner Broadcasting and World Championship Wrestling was born. On paper, this seemed like a great idea. Turner gave WCW a national television deal and put millions of dollars behind the product. Unfortunately, new management was hired to run the company - management that had no idea how to run a professional wrestling company AT ALL. The first man to become President for WCW was Jim Herd, a man whose only experience in management was being a regional manager for Pizza Hut and station manager for a radio show in Atlanta, Georgia. Herd and Flair had problems almost from the beginning. Herd bold-faced lied to Ric Flair about his contract stipulations and didn't think Flair had the right look or talent to be WCW's World Champion. Herd told Flair that he wanted him to lose the title to Lex Luger even though an earlier arrangement had been reached that Flair would lose the belt to Sting. Flair absolutely refused to lose the belt to Luger and gave an ultimatum to lose the belt to Barry Windam instead. Herd refused the ultimatum and sent Doug Dillenger, the head of WCW security, to Flair's house to collect the belt. Flair accepted, only if Herd agreed to pay the $25,000 deposit plus interest back to Flair that he originally paid for the belt (a requirement all World Champions had to abide by.) Herd refused to pay and told Flair to go "f---" himself. Flair immediately called Vince McMahon and told him he was ready to come to the WWF and had the WCW belt in his possession as a little bonus. Flair was hired by WWE in 1991 and a month after the Flair/Herd phone call, Herd was fired by WCW. |
