Ricky Steamboat suffers career-ending back injury. On August 24, 1994, at WCW's Clash of the Champions, Steve Austin was defending his United States Heavyweight title against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. At one point in the match when Austin was sitting on the top turnbuckle, Steamboat climbed to the top to further attack Austin. However, when Steamboat got to the top, Austin "kayfabed" head-butted Steamboat knocking him off the turnbuckle. What happened next didn't look that painful to the average viewer, but it would end up being the single worst injury of his wrestling career. When Steamboat went to take his back bump, he landed awkwardly on his tailbone, instead of flat on his back, which began an irritation on his back muscles. To make matters worst, Steamboat, not knowing the seriousness of his injury during the match, performed several high-flying maneuvers and high-risk bumps that further agitated the injury. Steamboat would finish the match and ended up defeating Austin for the United States title. Unfortunately, the injury was severe enough to force him into retirement and Steamboat had to forfeit the United States Championship at Fall Brawl 94. |
