Steven Regal fired from WCW for shooting on Bill Goldberg. On February 9, 1998, Bill Goldberg was, at that time, an unstoppable force in World Championship Wrestling. A former football player, now a rookie in professional wrestling, he was given an amazing push by WCW. He was over as one could be even without speaking on the microphone for months, which at most times is important for one's character. Fans would chant his name at the opening of Monday Nitro and Thursday Thunder, during boring matches, all the way to the end of the programs (which was at times an audio recording playing over the P.A. system). He would literally walk to the ring, bell rings, he'd spear his opponent, perform his signature "Jackhammer", score the pin, and leave in less than 10 seconds. Steven Regal was a veteran of WCW and had a background in amateur wrestling, and felt Goldberg did not deserve this massive push due to Goldberg's limited wrestling ability, or so he thought. To prove this, during their match on WCW Nitro, Regal began shooting on Goldberg. From the opening bell, "Lord" Steve Regal approached Bill Goldberg in Greco-Roman style, using open palm thrust and face slaps, as well as headlocks, head butts, and several arm & wrist locks on Goldberg. Goldberg kept trying to cooperate with him, but Regal was relentless. At one point, Goldberg threw Regal as if to throw him into the ropes and be bounced back. Instead, Regal stopped in mid move, turned around and head-butted Goldberg in the gut. For over 6 minutes, Regal continued his shoot-style wrestling on Goldberg, and to Regal's and the WCW announcer's surprise, Goldberg could wrestle. Once he realized what Regal was doing, he became more vicious and aggressive with his attacks and submissions. Regal finally had enough, however, he did not take his feet off the ground when Goldberg speared him, but simply fell backwards. When Goldberg would perform his Jackhammer, he would normally hold his opponents in the air for a few seconds. Regal did not allow this to happen as he threw his feet back as soon as he allowed Goldberg to lift him up. The result was an actual pretty good Greco-roman style match that resulted in Steven Regal being fired from WCW for not allowing Goldberg to squash him.
