WCW time keeper rings the bell early. On May 23, 1993, The Hollywood Blondes (Steve Austin & Brian Pillman) were defending their WCW tag-team titles against Dos Hombres (Ricky Steamboat and Tom Zenk) in a steel cage match. On one WCW Saturday Night, Austin and Pillman faced an unknown masked team known as Dos Hombres (literally ”two guys”) who they assumed were a couple of Luchadors from Mexico. The match started out rather inconspicuously, until the two masked men started showing moves more consistent with Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas than two Luchadors. Douglas and Steamboat (as Dos Hombres) defeated The Hollywood Blondes and earned themselves a title shot at Slamboree 93. However, by the time Slamboree rolled around, Shane Douglas had been fired by WCW. Rather than cancel the much-hyped steel cage match between the two teams, WCW put wrestler Tom Zenk under the mask to replace Douglas. Zenk was told not to unmask at any point during the match and only let Steamboat unmask to gain heat. This was done to lead-on fans in believing it was still Douglas under the mask. At one point during the match, Steamboat climbed the top of the cage and took out both Austin and Pillman with a flying cross body block. He covered both men but only got a two-count. However, the time keeper thought a three count was made and rang the bell for the match to be over, even though the planned finish was to have The Hollywood Blondes retain the titles. |
