Mr. Pogo becomes paralyzed by falling onto an exploding barbed-wire board.

On August 1, 1996 at an FMW show at the Shiodome, Terry Funk took on Mr. Pogo in an barbed-wire exploding board deathmatch. The title of the match ended up being very appropiate after the following incident.

At one spot in the match, Terry Funk blew fire from his lit branding iron at Mr. Pogo. Pogo went blind (kayfabe) and landed belly first in the pit of barbed-wire and C4 down below. The spot looked like it went off perfectly, until Mr. Pogo did not move for the remainder of the match.

After several moments, an attendie came over to look over Pogo and see if there was a problem. As this was happening, Funk exited the ling and laid Pogo's trademark miniture slingbalde across his back and nailed him with Funk's trademark branding iron. Pogo didn't react at all and Funk knew something was wrong. To buy time, Funk started walking like a madman to other attendees who were near Pogo's motionless body.

Funk then had the idea to once again blow smoke towards Pogo, but not directly at him as to buy more time. He did this, but accidently set a board on fire that was in contact with Pogo's pants. Funk panicked, broke character, and grabbed the board and threw it away before it had a chance to burn a now-obviously paralyzed Pogo. A smaller peice of the board was still on fire that Funk tried to put out with the original peice.

Funk went to "attack" Pogo again but this time was stopped by one of the ring-side crew and began brawling with him. After he burned (kayfabe) the crew member several times with the iron, he started waving it at the crowd and the camera man desperately buying time and trying to save the match.

Funk finally made it back to the ring and grabbed a mic and stated "No more Pogo, Pogo is dead! No More Onita, Onita is dead! No more FMW, FMW is dead!" Then Funk said, "Pogo, you’re a piece of shit." Funk & Quinones both taunted Pogo and yelled for him to get up. Pogo was eventually helped up. He was able to lean against the ring and address the crowd before being stretchered out and taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
