Marc Mero busts open Steven Austin's mouth. On June 23, 1996 during WWE's King of the Ring tournament pay-per-view, Steve Austin and Marc Mero had qualified to go against each other in the semi-finals of the tournament. According to WWE's The Legacy of Stone Cold DVD, at one point during the match, Marc Mero gave Austin a simple dropkick which was miscued and busted open Austin's mouth. This is, however, incorrect as Austin mouth was kicked but it happened when Mero attempted a back-roll up and accidentally kicked Austin in the upper lip. During the match, you can hear Vince McMahon commentating on when the blood first becomes noticeable. The dropkick that The Legacy of Stone Cold DVD claims busted open Austin's mouth didn't happen until nearly 8 minutes later in the match. Regardless of when the kick happened, Austin was taken to a hospital immediately after the match and given 14 stitches in his lip. He would go on to face and defeat Jake Roberts in the finals of the tournament and it would also be the night he coined his infamous "Austin 3:16" catch phrase in a post-match promo. |
