The Mass Transit Incident . *On November 23, 1996, ECW was holding a house show in Revere, Massachusetts. A local teenager and aspiring wrestler named Eric Kulas, a.k.a. Mass Transit, asked ECW manager Paul Heyman if he could fill in for Axel Rotten, who was scheduled to tag with D-Von Dudley in a match against The Gangstas, New Jack and Mustapha Saed. Kulas had little to no previous training, yet insisted that another wrestler, Killer Kowalski, had trained him. He allegedly lied to Heyman about his age (claiming that he was 19) and falsified his documentation. His father also vouched for him. Kulas was informed before the match that he would have to "blade". Kulas asked New Jack to blade him since he never had done it himself and New Jack agreed. New Jack accidentally cut Kulas' forehead too deeply with an exacto knife and severed two arteries in Kulas' forehead. Kulas was quickly separated from his partner D-Von Dudley most of the match whilst The Gangstas double-teamed the young man. Meanwhile, Kulas' father, who was at ringside, berated The Gangstas, exclaiming "Take it easy on him, he's just a kid." After absorbing some especially brutal weapon shots from New Jack, the time came for Kulas to be bladed, and New Jack tried to hold the teenager steady as he made the incision. The footage of the event showed Kulas screaming immediately after being cut. However, careful listeners to the tape of the incident heard New Jack bend down and ask Kulas "Are you alright, man?" After the cut had been made, to which Kulas replied "Yeah." Following the blading, Kulas was hit with several more weapon shots, before New Jack pinned him to finish the match. As the camera zoomed in on the blood pouring out of Kulas' forehead and a medic rushed into the ring to try and stem the bleeding, New Jack grabbed the house microphone and, with one foot on the unconscious Kulas' chest, exclaimed, "McMahon, Bischoff, look at this motherfucker.....As far as I'm concerned, that fat piece of shit can bleed to fucking death, because I don't give a fuck." Because of this event, ECW was thrown off pay-per-view. Soon after, Kulas' family sued ECW and New Jack over the incident, but the jury acquitted them. Shortly thereafter, ECW was granted ppv television rights. Kulas passed away on May 12, 2002 at the age of 22 due to complications from gastric bypass surgery.
