The Manny Fernandez receipt.

During the 1980's, Frank "Brusier" Brody was one of wrestling's biggest stars in Japan & Puerto Rico, despite not having his name made in a ring owned by a McMahon or a Crockett. That was just fine by Brody, as he had a grudge with wrestling's two biggest companies due to professional wrestling was becoming more structured and wrestling companies, such as WWF and NWA, were putting wrestlers on contracts and having more stable talent pools.

Because Brody was a booker as well, most of his talent was being fluctuated to the NWA and WWF. Brody conversely became more erratic with his bookings, and especially, his behavior. One notable story Lex Luger has told was during a January 1987 cage match between Bruiser Brody and rising star, Lex Lugar, whom was on his way to the big time with Jim Crockett’s NWA promotion, Brody stopped co-operating with Lugar in mid-match and taped razor blades to the ends of his fingers, looking to teach Luger a lesson in respect, that saw Lugar scramble out of the cage in fear.

Brody later informed Luger personally that the stunt was not a personal issue between the two, but a business one between Brody and the office about pay & a booking dispute. Still, it was as unprofessional behavior as you can get, and some people in the industry were becoming increasingly tired of Brody and his attitude.

Further down the spiral on July 17, 1988, Frank "the Brusier" Brody and booker Invader I, Jose Huertez Gonzales, got into a disagreement, at a Puerto Rico wrestling card. Gonzales invited Brody to step into the shower so they would not be seen arguing in front of the other wrestlers in the locker room. There, Gonzales stabbed Brody. He may have lived, but it took half an hour for an ambulance to reach the stadium, by which time Brody’s wounds had become infected. He was taken to the hospital, but died a short time later.

The incident went to trial and Gonzales was acquitted of the murder of Brody, despite several wrestler eye witnesses. Gonzales claimed self defense. Many believe the lack of evidence was due to many of the foreign wrestlers fear of not returning back to the islands, especially if they gave evidence against Gonzales. Dutch Mantell, now one of the bookers for TNA, was there when Brody was stabbed and you can read his recollections of it here.

Three months later on October 7, 1989 during Puerto Rican based WWC's 16th anniversary show, long-time friend of Brody, Manny Fernandez, was booked in a match against Invader #3.

Fernadez waited for his moment to strike and with three stiff top rope knee drops broke 2 of Invader #3's ribs which pierced his lungs and caused Invader to spit up blood instantly. Fernandez saw this as "payback" for what Invader #1 did to Bruiser Brody.

It took Invader #3 three years to recover and he was never the same as he suffered from constant shoulder pain throughout the rest of his career.
