Mankind is severely injured in Hell in a Cell match. During WWE's 1998 King of the Ring that took place at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mankind (Mick Foley) took on The Undertaker in a Hell in the Cell match. The Hell in the Cell itself is a large cage with a roof that stands at 16 feet high. As mentioned in Mick Foley's book "Have a Nice Day", Foley's longtime friend and mentor Terry Funk suggested they start the match at the top of the cage; that way the match could be extremely exciting and could mask the fact that The Undertaker was wrestling with a broken foot. So as planned, both men climbed to the top of the cage which started to break under their combined weight. Undertaker did not want Foley to take the massive fall, but Foley insisted that it would be alright. Undertaker repeatidly said no until the final moments of the match. Foley then gave the signal and Taker sent him off the top of the cage into the spanish announcers table. EMT's immediately rushed the scene and inspected Foley to ensure that he was not seriously injured. As they put him on a stretcher and proceeded to carry him out, Foley got back up and despite having a dislocated shoulder, made his way back up the cage. After a small fight ensued, Foley took a chokeslam onto the cage. The roof quickly gave way sending Foley crashing to the ground. While the previous one had been planned, this fall from the chokeslam was not, and unfortunately the ring being used was one of the older WWE rings, meaning the landing was alot harder then had it been one of the newer rings. During the course of the match, Mick had received a dislocated jaw, a dislocated shoulder, a bruised kidney, 2 broken ribs, one and a half missing teeth, 14 stitches beneath his lip and one nasty concussion. It was so bad that backstage Foley, who did not remember anything after the second fall, asked the Undertaker if they had used the thumbtacks in the match, leaving Undertaker to tell Foley to look at his own arm, which of course, was still covered in the tacks. The clips of the cage falls are one of the most played clips in WWE history. Even though he had lost the match, the next night on RAW, Foley's fan base greatly increased as many fans brought signs stating that Foley is God. Foley was quick to point out that he was not god, but he was good. |
