Triple H punished for breaking kayfabe at Madison Square Garden. Whats commonly known as Curtain Call: The MSG Incident took place on May 19, 1996 at a WWE house show at Madison Square Garden. On that night longtime friends Shawn Michaels, Diesel, Razor Ramon, and Triple H, (known backstage as The Kliq) had various matches against each other on the last night Diesel and Razor Ramon would be in the WWE. Both wrestlers were heading to rival federation WCW and this was their last match. Hunter Hearst Hemsley defeated Razor Ramon in a singles match and Shawn Michaels defeated "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel in a cage match. After the cage match took place, Razor ran into the ring and gave Michaels a farewell hug, this was not seen as a problem as both were faces at the time. Then however, Hunter (who was a heel at the time) entered the ring and gave both men his own farewell hug. Diesel then joined the ring and the entire kliq (with the exception of X-Pac, who was at home healing from an injury) gave a four way goodbye hug. This was seen as a major problem by WWE management because at the time they wished to maintain the illusion that the feuds between the heels and faces was indeed real, and this openly disproved that. WWE management wanted to punish those involved for this action, however Diesel and Razor were already on their way to WCW, and Shawn was seen as a major player in the company and a punishment for him could mean bad business for the WWE. So the punishment fell squarely on Hunter's head. Scheduled to win the King of the Ring that year and make his way to main card status, Hunter was now held back and became a jobber for some time. This one incident was the birth of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's major push. However, Hunter would prove this mere setback as he would eventually make his way to the top of the company. |
