James Mitchell scalps Raven with sheep clippers.

On September 17, 2003 during NWA: TNA's weekly pay-per-view show, Shane Douglas with James Mitchell took on Raven in a grueling Hair vs. Hair match which saw Douglas as the winner. After the match, Mitchell, who was feuding with Raven at the time along with Douglas' New Church, sat Raven down in a chair and began trimming Raven's hair, or so they thought.

Mitchell said in an interview with Wrestlingepiccenter.com that the trimmers he used were not trimmers you groom your hair with, but actual sheep clippers with "shark teeth" blades. As Mitchell was buzzing Raven's hair, he failed to realize he was holding the sheep clippers upside-down which ended up causing the blades to scalp Raven's head.

Mitchell said when he realized what he was doing live on pay-per-view, he thought...

"What are you going to do? Say "Oops, I'm sorry" or are you gonna' act like a sadistic motherfucker and just start digging in, ya know? That's what I did."

You can see on the tape, just before the show goes off the air, a piece of flesh fall off of Raven's head beside his ear. Mitchell stated he watched the tape the next day and nearly got sick when he saw what he had did, especially the scene with the ripped flesh. As he was watching it, his wife brought him a plate of lasagna that Mitchell almost lost his appetite on.

Mitchell said in the interview that he knew his actions would cause Raven to be infuriated and that he was ready for Raven to physically hurt him. Raven cursed Mitchell backstage and nearly hit him, but pulled his punch and calmed his nerves. However, before Raven left, he rubbed his hand over his massively bloody scalp and pie-faced James Mitchell.

Both men ended up apologizing to each other by the end of the night and eventually agreed that the accident was "better for the business" as it was one of the goriest Hair vs. Hair matches in wrestling history.
