Hogan & Flair confused during strap match. On March 19, 2000 during WCW's Uncensored pay-per-view main event, Hulk Hogan took on Ric Flair in a strap match. The rules for a strap match state that a winner is declared when one of the participants touches all four corners of the ring unopposed by his opponent. During the near 30 minute match, everything was going fine until the last 3 minutes. Ric Flair, after knocking Hogan down with a loaded taped fist, attempted to pin Hogan. Not only that but the referee, whose suppose to be knowledgable of the rules more than anyone, attempted to make a 3-count. Tony Schiavone announced under his breathe that you couldn't make a pin fall in a strap match but exploded with excitement when Hogan kicked out. A few moments later, Hogan had touched 3 corners of the ring and was about to win the match when Lex Luger interfered. Hogan made short work of Luger and took the opportunity to make sure Flair didn't get up by nailing him with his trademark leg drop. Maybe in a moment of just routine and/or habit, Hogan covered Flair and the referee once again made a full 3-count. The bell rung signaling Hogan as the winner and when Hogan got to his feet, decided to touch the 4th turnbuckle anyway after the match was already "over." |
