Chris Candido's fatal leg injury.. On April 24, 2005 at the TNA Lockdown PPV, during the Apolo/Sonny Siaki - Chris Candido/Lance Hoyt Six Sides of Steel match, Chris Candido dislocated his ankle and fractured both his tibia and fibula when opponent Sonny Siaki landed on his leg while performing a leg lariat. The injury caused Candido to have surgery done and a steel plate screwed into his leg. On her RF Shoot Interview, Tammy Lynn Sytch, Candido's long-time and well-known girlfriend, said the doctor had failed to let Chris Candido know that he could not take a plane ride home after his surgery. Candido did so, which caused a blood clot to form in his leg. During this time he had also come down with a terrible case of pneumonia, and had to have his lungs drained of fluid so he could breathe easier. Unfortunately, it was too much for Candido's weakened body. On April 28, 2005, only 4 days after the leg injury, the man known as "No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido passed away in his hospital bed. He was 33 years old. Tammy Lynn Sytch told RF Video that for weeks after his death, several independent wrestling promotions, which Candido had never worked for, were holding memorial Chris Candido cards and none of the money earned from those shows was given to Sytch or the Candido family. Wrestlers that never shared a locker room with Candido were wearing Candido arm-bands and dedicating matches to him during the card. Tammy was also going to use the money from Candido's last TNA check for funeral payments, but TNA refused to give Sytch the money due to Tammy and Chris not be married and kept it themselves. They did, however, send her a turkey as a gift. Mr. "No Gimmicks Needed" Chris Candido was a comical, fun-loving guy as described by many of the people who knew him inside and outside the ring. A special video package was put together for Chris Candido on the Forever Hardcore ECW documentary as a tribute to his memory, and was honored at ECW's very first ONE NIGHT STAND pay-per-view. Many don't realize this but he is one of the few stars in history to work for and hold titles in NWA, ECW, WCW, WWF, & XPW. |
