The Infamous Black Saturday. Through out the 1970's and 80's, Georgia Championship Wrestling, later renamed World Championship Wrestling, had been a staple program on Ted Turner's WTBS. Fans watched in record numbers every Saturday to see the biggest stars of the National Wrestling Alliance. So you can imagine the fans shock when on July 14th, 1984, Vince McMahon popped up on their screen telling the viewers that TBS would now be the home of the superstars of the WWF. WWF had taken over the timeslot in an attempt to increase it's visibility on a national level. All the fans cared about however was that their familiar wrestling programming was gone without warning. This incident has been commonly named by wrestling fans as "Black Saturday." |
