WCW Announcer's Can Not Take Viagra-on-a-Pole match Seriously.

On July 31st, 2000, World Championship Wrestling, being booked by Vince Russo, held one of the worst gimmick matches in wrestling history: a Viagra-On-A-Pole match between Billy Kidman and Shane Douglas on WCW Nitro.

The angle that led to this match was a sex tape that leaked between Shane Douglas and Torrie Wilson, showing Shane Douglas suffering from erectile dysfunction. May I remind you, WCW was on the brink of shutting down at this point after losing in ratings for months to World Wrestling Entertainment and they tried fixing that problem with matches like this.

The match was being called by Nitro announcers Tony Schiavone, Scott Hudson, and Mark Madden. Schiavone started by announcing the rules of the match which were "If you get the bottle of viagra, you can use it on your opponent". This will be important later on.

From the very beginning, Mark Madden sarcastically called the action, comparing it to "classic viagra-on-a-pole matches", providing competitor names such as Andre The Giant, Lou Thez, Nick Bockwinkle, Muhammad Ali, and many others. He made sexual innuendos while calling the match and cracked jokes like a bad late-night comedian. Schiavone, while trying not to laugh, kept telling him to shut up to no avail.

When it became apparent Madden had no intentions on trying to sell this match seriously, Scott Hudson told Schiavone to "Hang in there, Tony." Even Madden commented on the situation by telling his team, "You guys knew what you were getting when you hired me."

Back in the ring, when Kidman finally climbed the pole got the bottle of viagra, Douglas attacked Kidman and the bottle accidentally shattered too early. Douglas was suppose to nail Kidman in the head with it, with some of viagra pills landing in his mouth. Instead, Kidman was forced to pick them up off the ring and eat them like they had already fallen in his mouth.

The referee turned around and saw Douglas had the bottle of Viagra and declared him as the winner, even though the rules only stated "you can use the bottle on your opponent as a weapon". This left the announcers and fans completely confused as to what happened. So Kidman swallowed the pills and lost the match but in a way, Kidman was a winner. He did a segment later in the show where he took home three girls from the locker room after they saw his bulging erection.
